Your Google Business Profile is your real homepage

By Zachary Burns · October 13, 2026

When someone searches for what you sell, the first thing they see is not your website. It is the box on the right side of Google, or the map pin on their phone. That box is your Google Business Profile. For a lot of customers, it is the only thing they look at before they call.

Why it matters more than you think

People decide fast. They look at your photos, your star rating, your hours, and whether you are open right now. If any of that is missing or wrong, they tap the next listing.

Google also uses your profile to decide who shows up in the map results. A complete, active profile has a better shot at the top three spots than a half-finished one.

The five things most profiles get wrong

Check yours against this list. Most businesses miss at least two.

  • Wrong or missing hours, especially holiday hours.
  • No photos, or one blurry photo of the sign from 2017.
  • The wrong main category. "Contractor" is not the same as "Roofing contractor."
  • An empty services list. Google cannot show you for things you never listed.
  • No website link, or a link to a Facebook page instead of a real site.

What to do this week

Log in at business.google.com. Fix your hours. Add ten real photos: the front, the inside, your work, your team. Pick the most specific category that fits. Fill in every service you offer, in plain words a customer would search.

Then post one update. A new photo or a short note about what is new. Profiles that stay active tend to stay visible.
